Girls Varsity Tennis · Varsity Tennis Shuts Out Lansing Catholic

Yesterday the varsity girls tennis team hosted Lansing Catholic to open up the week of the CAAC tournament. Even though Lansing Catholic tried to make comebacks on a few courts, the Raiders were too much to handle and swept the Cougars 8-0. Winning for Portland were singles Rebekah Ludema, Aisnley Ludema, Kayla Weller, Taylor Jenks, and doubles Rachel VanHouten/Riley Thelen, Sam Weber/Julia Savage, Novelle Matteson/Marua Lufkin, and Emily Bigelow/Danielle Curtiss. The girls’ next action is today when they head to Fowlerville.

Today marked our first 8-0 win of the season, which is the perfect way to start out the week of the CAAC tournament. We got off to a great start on all courts, but Lansing Catholic picked up some steam during second sets and made matches tight. All around, our girls focused on their patterns and executed well. The competitiveness and toughness we saw today will serve them well for the upcoming week. The match of the day goes to 3 doubles. Novelle and Maura have been in a few tight matches and struggled to play through nerves. Today, though, they embraced the moment, closing out the first set and blanking Lansing Catholic in the second.
